What Phil had to say and there was one more bike than I realized so make that 102 kids back on their bikes . . .
“What a day! We had about 15+ DPR folks and family members that came out to repair bikes for the kids that live right around our DPR SJ office. When the day was done, we had fixed 102 bikes! Trumping our 93 the previous year at our office. Most of the kids said “HEY! You guys did this last year!”, and my leading questions help uproot the real issue. “Is this the only time that you get your bike fixed?” To which the response is unanimously, “Yes.” Other stories of not being able to get to school if they didn’t get their bike fixed, or having to use their little sister’s bike to get around. A lot of these kids have such desperate scenarios at home, but they have some huge hearts and are so grateful for what we do for them. The “FIXIE” revolution is taking place, which means skinny tires and a lot of flats! We equipped the older kids with patch kits and showed them how to use them, teaching some self-sufficiency in the process. For those of you who showed up, THANK YOU SO MUCH. These events would not happen without you!”
